Alfred W. Goodyear III, a former resident of Pacific Palisades, passed away on July 23 in San Diego, due to complications following a hip fracture. He was 83 years old. Goodyear was born on April 8, 1928, in Birmingham, Alabama. After attending high school and graduating from the Georgia Military Academy, he enrolled at Penn State University where he graduated in 1949 with a B.A. degree in liberal arts. He was active in campus life, serving as a manager of the cross-country program and president of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Alfred (Al) served in the U.S. Army and fought in Korea, where he was awarded the Purple Heart as a sergeant in the Third Division Reconnaissance Company (1951-1952). He began his publishing career in 1952 as a field representative for Prentice-Hall in Virginia and was with this company for 40 years. During this time, he served as president of Goodyear Publishing Company, a subsidiary of Prentice-Hall, in Pacific Palisades. After the Goodyear firm moved to a larger office in Santa Monica and was later sold, Alfred continued to work in his profession as vice president of Sage Publications in Beverly Hills, vice-president of education for Mitchell International of San Diego and associate publisher for Bristlecome Books, a subsidiary of Mayfield Publishing Company. An avid tennis player and golfer throughout most of his life, Al became an active musican after retirement, playing, managing and singing in musical groups that included the Stardust Harmonaires, Big John’s Big Sound, and the Bernardo Heights Quartet. He played clarinet as well as alto and tenor saxophone. Al is survived by his former wife Greta Hunt and stepdaughter Donna Pekar, both of Pacific Palisades; two children, Scott Goodyear and Sandy Falato, who reside in New Jersey with their respective families; and five grandchildren. A memorial celebrating Al’s life was held at his place of residence, Redwood Town Court, in Escondido. His fellow bandmembers attended and played at the service.
