This time of year is relatively quiet in the Eastern Sierra. The kids are back in school, and Mammoth Mountain just recently opened for skiing and snowboarding at the start of November.
What many people don’t know is that the Eastern Sierra is a wonderful place to see fall colors—and now is the time.
Because of the great variation in elevation, the show can go on for quite some time. The leaves at the higher elevations turn first, and the fiery reds, oranges and yellows cascade down the mountainsides, changing each day as the temperatures drop.
The best lakes for seeing the colors are Rock Creek Lake, Convict Lake, Sotcher Lake, Lake George Parker Lake and Silver Lake.
If you want to enjoy the colors from your car, then here are three scenic drives. The Mammoth Lakes Basin is reached by heading west on Main Street (Hwy 203). The road dead ends at Horseshoe Lake after passing Twin Lakes, Lake Mary and Lake Mamie.
Lake George can be reached by turning left just after Lake Mary. Dramatic stands of aspen seem even more colorful when they are surrounded by the dark green pine forests.
The June Lake Loop is another lovely place to see the fall colors, especially by Silver Lake.
And lastly, the Mammoth Scenic Loop has many stands of quaking aspen and dirt roads to explore further.
This is also a great time to shop for real estate. Our market has cooled off a bit. Inventory is still low but much better than it was at the beginning of the year.
Purchasing now would likely mean you could close escrow in time to spend the holidays with friends and family in your new house or condo. Let me know if I can assist you with any real estate needs.
