Palisades Bocce Club President extraordinaire Jimmy Dunne wrote this report recounting last Tuesday morning’s Spring Senior League semifinals and finals at Veterans Gardens:
Everyone was talking about the astounding level of play in the two semi-final matches—and then in the finals. Four spectacular teams duking it out!
The first semifinal pitted The Vinos versus The Martinis. All you can say is 97-year-old Dr. Mike Martini was absolutely on fire!
Joel Korotzer, Tom Burke, and Peter Schermer were world-class, with team captain Bud Kling dazzling the crowd with his between his legs masterpieces.
Gary “Palmer” Jacob had strike after strike down the right rail and Terri Webb showed a soft touch.
Cindy Kirven, who is helping to bring in new trees to Veterans Gardens, was a strong and steady force and is a potential MVP next season.
Korotzer had a chance to win the game with a Bay. He took the chance, stepped up to the line and crushed it! Victory Martinis in front of their adoring fans after outstanding performances by both teams.
The second semifinal matched The High Rollers against The Spring Chickens and once again the level of play was high. Mary Meisler and her guy, Ira “the Terrible” along with Phyllis and Roy Vego showcased their deep rail games.

In the end, The High Rollers proved too much to handle, with team captain Vito Altieri closing the game out with an impressive 5-Point Bay. It was a work of art.
The finals showdown was truly a “dream matchup” between The Martinis and The High Rollers. The league’s two legendary franchises battling it out.
The Martinis played well and smart, but it was not quite enough to take own the Yankees of the Senior League, The High Rollers.
A big shout out goes to John Arnold, who clearly ate a huge bowl of Wheaties before the matches.
Pick any player on The High Rollers—all of them delivered in one of the best matches ever in the history of the league. Can you say “dynasty?”
The High Rollers won the Autumn League title, they went 6-0 in regular season action, navigated through the playoffs and now have emerged as Spring League champions. The winners celebrated at Golden Bull with drinks and dinners.
Hugs between the two teams was the best part of the day. Summer League dates will be announced soon.
