Palisadians are in for a double-treat with the opportunity to view two new solo shows opening Saturday, February 19, at Topanga Canyon Gallery: “Spring Forward” by local artist Debbi Green and “Transluminations” by guest artist Marek Buchwald.
Green’s works can be found in the North Gallery and are said to reflect her love of the beauty she sees around her. She describes one of her paintings, “Dogma,” as a “tongue [in] cheek but honest mantra, representing compassion for all animals (and humans) and true respect for nature.”
“Using only oil for the past 15 years, this time around Green has played with torn pretty papers, various pastes, oil and acrylics and mark making with charcoal, pastels, and graphite, allowing the lines to show and make you look closer,” according to Topanga Canyon Gallery. “Quite a bit of her work offers a subtle humor. She even makes fun of herself in one painting where a cow offers up ‘I could paint better than that.’”
Buchwald is said to have produced hundreds of works of devotional art—primarily oil paintings and sculptural forms, which can be found in numerous places: from collector’s homes and museum installations, to sacred temples in India and the United States.
Buchwald has also made contributions to the feature animation film industry in the last 20 years as a director and designer. He has worked with Disney, DreamWorks and a number of smaller studios and independent productions.
His work was previously selected to appear at Context as part of Art Basel 2021. Art Basel is a leading fine art platform with an annual exhibition in Miami, Hong Kong, Switzerland and Paris, according to Topanga Canyon Gallery.
In this upcoming exhibition, he is showcasing pieces from “Transluminations”—transmissions + illuminations—a large body of work that was developed over a decade. The works are both intricate and bold, and make use of gold, silver and copper leaf as well as ink, integrated with oils.
“They are a journey of discovery through ancient sacred yoga texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, filtered through the lens of Chaos theory and Mandelbrot’s fractal geometry of nature,” Buchwald said in a statement.
The shows will run from Saturday, February 19, through Friday, March 13; 2 to 7 p.m. on Fridays, and 12 to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
Green will also be hosting a “Fun With Drawing” and interactive experience on Saturday, March 5.
