Service and Study Society is a Resource for Palisadians

Using talent and ingenuity, an individual can make a huge impact in the world around them.

One such individual is Palisadian Malia Yap, a rising sophomore at Harvard-Westlake School in Studio City, who is also a moderator in Service and Study Society, a nonprofit organization led by students, for students. The organization provides several different kinds of resources to other students worldwide.

“Our organization and the resources that we provide are all complimentary,” Yap said. “Service and Study Society is mainly based on our online Discord server, which includes all of the resources we have to offer, such as community service and scholarship opportunities.

“Ultimately, we want to help provide more resources for a greater number of students who need it. A benefit of our Discord server is that it is entirely online, which makes access very quick and easy for other people around the world. During this challenging time, it has been hard for some students to handle their academics, and we hope that our organization can support these students.”

Among the benefits Service and Study Society provides are community service and scholarship opportunities. The organization shares links to various competitions and opportunities over a variety of subjects, and students can easily and efficiently access these resources. It researches and shares around two to seven scholarship and community opportunities per week.

“We also have a designated ‘Homework Help’ section,” Yap added. “Students can ask questions about anything they are confused about or struggling with regarding their homework or any assignment they have. This allows for other students to work together and for the sharing of ideas between different people. Soon we will be offering tutoring to students in middle and high school.”

Service and Study Society has an efficient leadership team. Its moderators regulate conversations held between students and ensure that they behave in a suitable manner complying with their server rules. They use bots to further their server moderation, and any user can quickly and easily report anyone they believe to be violating the rules.

Team members all attend schools in the Los Angeles area and around the world. The organization now has a total of 122 members on its online Discord server. Harvard-Westlake is one Los Angeles-area school represented by many of the organization’s members.

“Service and Study Society strives to support local students the best way we can,” Yap explained. “Through the scholarships we share with our students and our homework help channels, we help provide resources essential to students just like us. Most of the students who access our organization are located in West Los Angeles, including Pacific Palisades. We hope to connect with more local students and help them as they progress through their educational journey.”
