In a tense pitching duel where one mistake could cost his team a win, left-hander Miles Kirshner stayed cool as a cucumber last Saturday at George Robert Field.
Kirshner came through on the mound and at the plate, throwing seven shutout innings and belting a double to score Cord Vanley in the fourth inning for the game’s only run to lead Palisades High’s baseball squad to a 1-0 victory over San Fernando on Coach Mike Voelkel’s birthday.
“Coming into this season we’re underdogs, everyone thinks our pitching is a question mark,” Kirshner said. I’m a guy who’s not going to throw a lot of strikeouts but I play to my defense. With Cord on second [base] I just put a good swing on it. If we play with this much intensity every game we can get back to where we were last year.”
Kirshner allowed two hits and made key pitches with runners in scoring position. Julian Jacobson tagged a runner out at home to complete a double play to end the sixth.
