Palisadian Justices on the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District, are seeking to retain their seats in the upcoming November election.
While Helen Bendix, Tricia Bigelow, John Segal and Arthur Gilbert, four justices on the ballot, are Pacific Palisades residents, they decide appeals for cases in the counties of Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo.
The non-partisan justices are all veterans of the court, with careers spanning decades and are all recipients of multiple awards throughout their legal careers.
Gilbert, who won the 2016 Outstanding Jurist by the Los Angeles County Board Association award, is regularly found throughout community events and is known as the “court’s poet laureate.”
“I have been a judge for over 40 years, and love my work. So I guess I will stick around for a while. My colleagues threatened me with great bodily injury if I retired,” Gilbert told the Palisadian-Post in 2016, upon receiving the award.
Now seeking to retain his seat, Gilbert appears to show no intention of retirement along with Bendix, who was appointed to the court by Governor Jerry Brown.
“We are active in professional, educational and community organizations dedicated to enhancing the lives of our fellow citizens,” the justices said in a press release.
