The 2018 Golden Globe Awards kicked off Hollywood’s annual crowning season on Sunday, Jan. 7, but this year, on a night known more for boozing and bedazzlement, a new social movement co-created by Palisadian actress Laura Dern took center stage.
Marking a dramatic tone shift away from the notoriously lax atmosphere of foreign press awards past, industry leaders donned somber black attires with a message written clearly on pins pressed into lapels and overcoats—“Time’s Up.”
The campaign, which aims to bring awareness to workplace harassment, was created in response to the fallout of several Hollywood men after film producer Harvey Weinstein was accused of assaulting dozens of actresses while running Miramax Films and The Weinstein Company.
Dern, who celebrated a particularly successful year after winning an Emmy last September, picked up another Best Supporting Actress trophy for her role as Renata Klein in HBO’s “Big Little Lies.”
While accepting the gilded award, the veteran actress used her special moment to ask those watching to join the effort and help put an end to a normalized “culture of silencing.”
“I urge all of us to not only support survivors and bystanders —who are brave enough to tell their truth—but to promote restorative justice. May we also please protect and employ them,” she said.
May we teach our children that speaking out without the fear of retribution is our culture’s new North Star.”
