For the third time in four seasons the Palisades High baseball team hit the road to open the City Section Division I playoffs, this time in Woodland Hills on Tuesday to face fifth-seeded El Camino Real.
The 12th-seeded Dolphins (16-13) were confident of an upset and it showed throughout a 5-3 loss that ended their season. Remy Meteigner singled to score Kiely Mizumoto tie the game 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning and the Dolphins took a 3-2 lead in the sixth when Gabe Stewart scored on a single by Will Smith. However, the Conquistadores (17-14) responded with three runs in the bottom half, the first on a balk and the other two on a double down the left field line by Cole Kitchen.
“In games like this, you have to get that key hit and make that big play,” Pali High Coach Mike Voelkel said. “These kids banded together and showed relentless competitive spirit. I’m extremely proud of them.”
Palisades and ECR had last met in the City quarterfinals in 2014 on the same field, where No. 9 Palisades stunned the top-seeded Chancellors 4-0 behind Holt Maybank’s two-hit masterpiece.
