Rustic Canyon Recreation Center is undergoing a facelift at the hands of its new park director Paige Barnes.
Barnes was introduced at the last Santa Monica Canyon Civic Association (SMCCA) meeting on March 8, where she informed the board members of the work she is beginning. Board members commented on the overall look of the center and noted how clean it looked.
“I’m just trying to start out the way that I would want someone to start out with me,” Barnes said to the group.
The board went on to hear various updates from the different committees. Sharon Kilbride from the Pacific Palisades Task Force on Homelessness (PPTFH) told the group there had been an upswing in tents at Will Rogers State Beach over the previous couple of weeks. Kilbride also informed the board of a transient who had been arrested for threatening a member of a film crew that had been filming at the beach.
The meeting turned to discuss preparations for the SMCCA annual meeting on May 10. Board president Marilyn Wexler informed the board that a number of seats needed to be filled after various members had rotated off or retired. Five people in attendance volunteered to fill the seats, after which Wexler made a motion to accept the volunteers as members to be put in place on May 10. The motion passed, but one more member is needed.
The Entrada sidewalk project was the last subject on the agenda. After lengthy discussion on the improvements that should be made as a part of the project, the board determined they needed more information from the city. Various members of SMCCA voiced frustrations that the city had not been communicating well with residents about the project. The SMCCA traffic committee will be drafting a letter to the city requesting more information regarding the plans for the project.
