
When the season started, Steve Kerr had high expectations for the Golden State Warriors. In May he signed a five-year, $25-million contract with the team and since then has enjoyed unprecedented success in his first coaching stint.

The former Palisades High baseball and basketball player led the club to a franchise-best start and in April he broke the NBA record for wins by a rookie coach with his 63rd in the Warriors’ 123-110 victory at Dallas. He coached the Western Conference to victory in the All-Star game and Golden State finished with the best record in the league at 67-15.
The Warriors swept the New Orleans Pelicans in the first round, beat the Memphis Grizzlies in six games in the second round and topped the Houston Rockets in five games in the conference finals. Now, for the first time since 1975, Golden State is in the NBA Finals and hosts the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1 tonight. The Warriors’ 40-year drought between Finals appearances is the longest of any team in league history.
