The most common question I’ve received as a Girl Scout for the past two years is, “what’s the Silver Award?” I’m about to tell you. The Silver Award is given when a Girl Scout troop works on a community service project for 50 hours. It is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette, usually in middle school, can earn.
Troop 12815 worked on protecting and saving our oceans. The oceans are in danger because of all the plastic we use and put in it. The oceans aren’t the only things in danger, either. The animals that live in it are and so are we.
Troop 12815 decided to promote less plastic usage around the Palisades and Los Angeles. At public venues, the troop delivered a presentation showing people the dangers of plastics and handed out reusable bags made out of old T-shirts to the listeners. We also used a PowerPoint presentation to drive home the issue.
Has the world been saved yet? Not quite. But to celebrate the work we’ve done so far, Troop 12815 was awarded the Silver Award at a ceremony at the home of our leader Lisa Moore Brown. At the ceremony, each girl was recognized and received a certificate from Mayor Eric Garcetti, California Senator Diane Feinstein, US Congressman Ted Lieu and from President Barack Obama.
The troop would like to encourage you to make a difference in reducing plastic pollution too. Be creative and don’t be careless with how you use plastic. Better yet – don’t use it at all.
