The Pacific Palisades Baseball Association’s Mustang All-Star team lost both of its games in the eight-team, double-elimination Super Regional PONY tournament in San Marcos last weekend. The U10 squad fell to Bakersfield, 8-2, and Murrieta Black, 11-1.
The Pali 10s earned the trip to San Marcos with an easy sweep in the PONY Baseball of America Southern California District Playoff tournament in early July, capped by a 9-5 victory over Cheviot Hills after Palisades had dominated its first two games by a combined margin of 44-3. The PPBA team earned a bye and advanced directly to the Super Regional, which featured teams from all over California, Utah, Washington, Oregon, Hawaii and Arizona.
In Friday’s opening round loss to Bakersfield, Preston Barnes pitched three innings and Jack Hassett and Jake Moore had RBIs, but it wasn’t enough as Bakersfield rallied from an early 2-0 deficit with five runs in the third, two in the fourth and one more in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
On Saturday against Murrieta Black, Alec Morrison drove in Palisades’ lone run and Hassett had two strikeouts on the mound while Ryan Kennedy also pitched an inning and two thirds, but a nine-run second by Murrieta Black was far too much for Palisades to overcome. The Regional winner was Bakersfield, who will advance to the West Zone tournament, beginning today in Los Alamitos.
The All-Star team was comprised of Barnes, Billy Bzura, Gil Cohen, Charlie Collins, Hassett, Lane Johnson, Kennedy, Brody Listen, Griffin Milner, Max Mirkin, Moore, Morrison, Cooper Morrow, Cooper Robinson and Cristopher Stimming. The coaches were Jim Hassett, Joe Kennedy and Russ Moore.
