Two Palisades High football players have been named to the All-City Section Division I squad, which was announced last Thursday. Senior Nick Lunn, a 6-foot-3, 270-pound offensive lineman, was a First Team selection and it was his steady blocking at left guard that allowed running back Joey Velez to gain over 1,300 yards.
“He loves to compete and when we needed a big play we ran behind him,” PaliHi Coach Tim Hyde said of Lunn, a First team All-Western League selection as a junior and Western League Lineman of the Year this fall. “His best game was against Venice. Recruiting is just picking up but so far Penn, Columbia and [University of] San Diego have expressed the most interest in him.”
Junior inside linebacker Duane McBroom was a Second Team All-City pick after racking up 90 tackles (42 solo, 48 assisted), with two interceptions and four fumble recoveries.
“Duane made the biggest play of the year when he stripped the running back after we took the lead against University,” Hyde said. “We recovered it, then got back-to-back first downs with Velez going left behind Lunn to run out the clock and clinch a playoff berth.”
At the PaliHi team banquet, Velez was voted Most Valuable Player, quarterback Taylor Mensik was offensive MVP, Lunn was Lineman of the Year, McBroom was defensive MVP and safety Kellen Ware was selected Back of the Year.
