Palisadian Andrew Bland barely broke a sweat as he won the men’s 5K in 15:52, beating his personal best time by two seconds. The 17-year-old Loyola track and cross-country standout was also first in his age category. ‘I’ve only had one week of training,’ said Bland, who normally runs the 1600 during the track season. He waited for his brother Matthew, a Corpus Christi student, to cross the line. The fastest woman was Santa Monica’s Theresa Fricke in 18:20. ‘I like this race because the whole community comes out and lines the race course and encourages the runners on,’ she said. Taking second in the women’s 5K was Palisadian Kathryn Turner, who finished a minute and a half slower. One of the most excited runners was (John) Will Jackson, 9, who ran 22:45 to win the 12-and-under division. ‘This was my second time running the race,’ Jackson said. ‘Last year I think I did 27 minutes, but this year I pushed myself a little more.’ On the other end of the spectrum was Jean Shargo, age 91, who pushed her dog Bonnie Jean in a stroller through the race and won the gold medal as the only competitor in the 90-and-older category with a time of one hour, 21 minutes. ’I used to run 10Ks when I was younger,’ said Shargo, wearing her 1985 race T-shirt. ‘It’s still worth doing the race because it’s fun and it’s exercise.’ ’We finished first in the 10K,’ said Carol Leacock, 75, referring to her husband Ted Mackie, 82. On closer explanation, they both won their category in the 5K race. ‘If you have two 5K’s you get a 10K,’ she explained.
