The time is now for the St. Monica High girls’ varsity volleyball team. Nine of 12 players on the Mariners’ roster are seniors, yet much of the team’s success this season rests in the hands of its only sophomore, Cambria Lagana. Lagana, the setter, is St. Monica’s only non-senior starter, but so far the Pacific Palisades resident is filling her role expertly at the Santa Monica school. Her crisp passing and accurate sets helped the Mariners to a 25-14, 25-14, 25-19 win over Sherman Oaks Buckley in their nonleague opener September 16. St. Monica is ranked No. 5 in the CIF Southern Section Division V-AA poll and will try to reclaim the Camino Real League title this fall. The team finished 19-9 last season and reached the second round of the playoffs. A multi-dimensional athlete, Lagana also plays basketball and runs track. In fact, she medaled in the 4 x 100 relay at the Southern Section finals last spring. Another Palisadian, Kaylie Ward, plays for St. Monica’s JV squad.
