The studio of deceased, famous American painter Sam Francis was charred by a large fire Thursday mid-morning. And a large black cloud of smoke from the blaze was visible for miles. Dozens of firefighters from the L.A.F.D. and the Santa Monica Fire Department fought to quell the house fire, but the studio could not be salvaged. The main house on West Channel Rd was not destroyed. A neighbor’s guest house was also burned, but her main house was not damaged. Sam Francis was an abstract expressionist painter who used the large wooden house as a studio until his death in 1994. It is believed that his sons continue to own the house. The cause of the fire is currently unknown. See next week’s Palisadian-Post for complete coverage.
