The YMCA Planning Committee (YPC) led local volunteers in the final stages of planting non-native brush clearance at the YMCA’s Simon Meadow, on the corner of Sunset and Temescal on March 30.
Marking the completion of a year-long collaboration to beautify this corner at the gateway to the Palisades, the YPC was initiated by Norman Kulla, Chief Counsel for Councilman Bonin, and includes members representing the Temescal Canyon Association, Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, Pacific Palisades Community Council and the YMCA. Volunteers came from the Pacific Palisades Woman’s Club, American Legion Post 283, the Rotary Club, Palisades Cares and Boy Scouts. Little ones planted native plants and picked up trash while adults did heavy lifting to clear dead tree limbs and get the area ready for summer campers.

Simon Meadow, named for YMCA patroness, Cindy Simon, and her husband, Bill Simon, is home to YMCA Youth Sports, summer day camp, community events and enrichment activities. The beautification project included a permanent fence and sign, sports field and native landscaping; lead contractor for the project was Palisadian Craig Price. Fundraising was led by Annie Barnes, who rallied local residents to make our town more beautiful. Thanks to these improvements, the Y is expanding programs all year long, including after-school enrichment, free play hours and community group use. Through these Simon Meadow programs, the Y will do more to strengthen our community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
