Anyone who is a fan of America’s national pastime should consider a trip to Omaha, Nebraska, where the College Baseball World Series is held every June to crown the NCAA champion in a double-elimination tournament culminating with a best-of-three final series. This year, Ole Miss won it all, defeating Oklahoma by scores of 10-3 and 4-2. Among the spectators at Charles Schwab Field that week were Palisades High baseball coach Mike Voelkel and his 34-year-old son Ryan, who took a three hour and 15 minute flight from Redmond, Washington to join his dad.
“I encourage those who appreciate the game to go there and experience it for yourself—the atmosphere is wonderful, people are delightful to talk with, the food is great, the venue is incredible and the baseball is awesome to watch,” said Voelkel, the Dolphins’ head coach since 2008.
“I’d never been to it before but it’s always been on my bucket list. The prices are reasonable, there’s a lot to do like concerts and stuff because the stadium is downtown. They had tables set up and booths everywhere. The place was packed. Every game was sold out. We were there five days and saw all the teams. I flew home in time to watch the finals on TV.”
