We all know that first impressions are important, especially when it comes to selling a large asset such as your home. The exterior of your home is the first aspect prospective buyers will see and remember—a home’s curb appeal can instantly turn them on or off of a home.
Oftentimes people drive by homes before even making an appointment to see the inside, so it is pertinent that the exterior looks its absolute best at all times. Below are a few easy ways to spruce up your curb appeal before coming on the market.
1. House numbers should be easily visible and attractive. Pick a font and that reflects the style of the neighborhood and complements your house as well.
2. Since garage doors take up so much space visually, it is vital that they look as best as possible. Make sure the paint is fresh and that any hardware looks sharp as well.
3. Walkways and handrails should be in good condition so buyers can easily access your home with no chance of tripping and it indicates that keeping your property safe is important to you.
4. Placing a doormat and topiaries at the front door creates a sense of welcome and makes the entrance feel complete.
5. The color of the front door also plays a big part into a home’s curb appeal. Traditional and modern homes work well with black or red doors (matte or shiny), and cottages or bungalows pair nicely with fun colors such as blue and yellow. Hardware should match the essence of the home and should look clean and sharp.
6. Have your windows professionally cleaned and screens removed so they are as clear as possible from both the inside and out. Sills and trim should be freshly painted, in good condition and all window coverings facing the street should be uniform.
7. Landscaping should be freshened up and match the style of your home. More formal homes pair nicely with trimmed lawns and hedges, while less formal tend to look inviting with wild flowers. Of course, in Southern California it is always smart to consider drought-resistant varieties as well.
8. It is just as important for your house to look great in the dark as it does in daylight. Buyers often drive by homes to see neighborhoods at all times of the day and may even schedule an evening showing. Make sure your exterior lights are strategically placed, in good working order and on timers to ensure they turn on each evening. As a bonus, a photographer can get some great night shots as well!
If you are thinking about selling your home, make sure to go over any recommend improvements with your broker before professional photos are taken and any showings are scheduled. A good agent should be able to help you decide what areas to spruce up as well as refer you to the proper licensed professionals.
