Community Planners
You printed a very nasty piece about people in the property industry also serving on the community council. But who else has the knowledge to do it—or do you just want to elect the proudly ignorant? They give up the hours, they don’t get paid and they step aside at any hint of a conflict of interest. If you think you can do better, stand for election. And prepare to be misunderstood, insulted and demeaned too.
Enablers
I read with interest your reporting from the homelessness task force on “enabling.” And then the row between Target in West Hollywood and actor John Barrowman when he bought clothes there for a homeless man: They stopped him, saying it was against store policy to enable. We used to call such people good Samaritans: Now those with a direct sense of personal responsibility are making the world a worse place for everyone, apparently.
Taking Action
The 2 Cents caller with the blocked driveway problem has a couple of options given that his/her courteous behavior has been met with disdain so typical of entitled yuppies. First, call LA City Bureau of Parking Enforcement and report the driveway blocking. A responding officer may or may not cite the car, depending upon how much of the driveway’s been blocked. Failing that, you should park your car on the street to block your own driveway. DOT PE will not cite you for blocking your own driveway and you have stuck it to the jerks who are disrespecting you. At least you know they’re not going to be able to block you. This will be even more satisfying to you if the offenders have established a pattern of visiting your neighbor and you can anticipate their arrival. City of LA Parking Enforcement is 213-485-4184. Good luck.
The Car Collection
I saw a picture of a garage space in the new development that Rick Caruso is going to use to store his car collection on the third floor. I wonder why that hasn’t been in any of the disclosed plans.
(Editor’s note: Caruso responds, “There is permitted space for storage, including vehicles on the second floor, but no decisions about how to use that space have yet been taken.”)
Job Seekers
Supervisor Sheila Kuehl seemed to go crazy last week praising Wolfgang Puck and Frank Gehry as “two local icons” remaking Gladstones. Gehry is Canadian and Puck is, like our former Governator, Austrian. So, it’s immigrants taking our jobs again (like the nation’s First Lady). It is not as if they are even Norwegian.
