Palisadian Gwendolen Twist chose to run Sunday’s Mountains 2 Beach Marathon as training for another race but she was feeling good early on and decided to push the pace. She wound up shaving three minutes off her personal-best time and was the first female to finish (26th overall) in a stellar 2:51.49. Her previous PR was 2:54 last year in Phoenix.
“I can’t believe it… I’m so pumped right now,” the 44-year-old said shortly after completing the 26.2-mile journey from Ojai to the Ventura Pier. “It was supposed to be a workout for Grandmas Marathon in three weeks but a few miles in I saw the lead girl was going slow so I decided to go for it. Now I need to decide if I run that for fun or if I really race it hard and try to go sub-2:50. The next three weeks of training will let me know if this race set me up for a great race or if this was my ‘A’ race.”
Twist lives in the Alphabet Streets and runs for Jane’s Elite Racing.
