As COVID-19 recedes, students are transitioning from isolation to in-person activities. K&M Center Director Dr. Karen Fried’s “Just for Now” tips frame this time to make it more manageable.
Just for now:
- Continue to prioritize health and safety and harmony in your home.
- Usual conflicts could be set aside, or minimized; it’s worth a try.
- Even though children may be excited to see their friends, be alert for signs of stress.
- The underlying personality/issues of your children may predict how they respond to these changes.
- We are all tired. It may be hard to manage children’s big emotions. Schedule time for “gripe sessions.” Set a timer and listen to your child. This is uninterrupted time for them to say anything on their mind. Don’t comment about the content.
- You might be tempted to relax limits and boundaries. Children need limits and boundaries to feel safe, particularly when the outside world is still chaotic.
- Fun—encourage your children to remember and plan fun activities.
- Our “Transition to Life After a Pandemic Workbook,” available at kandmcenter.com/store, provides fun, creative activities to help children process the pandemic and prepare for post-pandemic learning.
