I hope that you are enjoying learning a new yoga pose each month and incorporating a healthy activity into your daily lifestyle. This month’s posture is Warrior 1 (Virabhadrasana I), and LAPD Officer John Redican was a great sport in helping to demonstrate this powerful yoga pose.
Benefits of Warrior I Pose:
Strengthens the feet, hamstrings and quadriceps
Builds core power
Helps with the internal rotation of the leg
Increases body-mind connection by developing concentration and balance
Modifications:
Keep your hands on your knees or hips if you have a shoulder injury.
Always work within your own range of limits and abilities.
If you have medical conditions, talk to your doctor before practicing this or other yoga poses.
Instructions:
Begin by inhaling through your nose while standing with your feet hip-distance apart with your arms at your side.
Exhale as you step your feet wide apart, approximately four to five feet.
Turn your right foot out 90 degrees and pivot your left foot inward at a 45-degree angle.
Keeping your pelvis turned forward toward your right leg, bend your right knee over your right ankle, with your shin perpendicular to the floor.
Reach your arms up, keeping them parallel or pressing your palms together.
Hold this pose for up to one minute, before switching sides.
