The Palisadian-Post’s Matthew Meyer, community gardening whiz Bruce Schwartz, Moon Valley Nursery and other volunteers pitched in to complete the work of a late friend in February.
Palisadian Greg Willis planted a tree in this location off Sunset shortly before his passing late last summer. Willis’ ill health made it difficult to care for the tree and a late summer heat wave kept the young sapling from ever growing into a healthy tree.
Schwartz, Meyer and others tried to revive the dying fern pine before arborists determined it was a lost cause. The volunteers removed the old tree, and Moon Valley Nursery’s Hollywood branch generously agreed to donate a new sapling for the location.
The tree has been thoroughly vetted, earning plaudits from the city’s Urban Forestry division for its drought resistance, hearty nature and roots that are not disruptive to sidewalks.
Volunteers will continue to care for the tree in its adolescence.
