As part of its 38th season of concerts, St. Matthew’s Music Guild will host its Annual Holiday Concert on Friday, December 9, beginning at 8 p.m.
The choir and soloists of St. Matthew’s Parish will join the Chamber Orchestra at St. Matthew’s—under the direction of Dwayne Milburn—for the show.
The program will feature “Winter” from Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons,” “Magnificat in D major” by C.P.E. Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann’s “Overture of Nations Ancient and Modern.”
Born in 1714, C.P.E. Bach is the son of Johann Sebastian Bach. He spent much of his career in Berlin and developed a style of music closer to the works of Haydn and Mozart. The setting of “Magnificat” has been described as a “grand musical work” for full orchestra, soloists and chorus.
Telemann—a contemporary of J.S. Bach—was his godfather and preceded him as court composer in Hamburg, according to the Music Guild.
Yi-Huan Zhou will take on the soloist role for the Vivaldi concerto.
“Yi-Huan Zhou was concertmaster of the orchestra for more than 20 years before relocating to the East Coast in the summer of 2022,” according to a press release. “The Music Guild will celebrate Zhou’s long tenure with the orchestra, and he will serve not only as featured soloist, but as concertmaster for the evening.”
A pre-concert lecture, “Liner Notes with Tom Neenan,” will kick off the night at 7:10 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public.
The Chamber Orchestra at St. Matthew’s was first established in 1985, according to a Music Guild program, by a group of professional musicians looking to “rehearse and perform a broad spectrum of music for chamber orchestra in an intimate and acoustically vibrant setting.”
The December 9 concert will take place at St. Matthew’s Church, located at 1031 Bienveneda Avenue. Tickets are $35, or season passes are available starting at $200.
