St. Matthew’s Music Guild will present pianist David Kaplan on Friday, February 10, at 8 p.m. with a program that features a solo entitled, “Quasi Una Fantasia.”
Kaplan has performed with orchestras across the world, including the Britten Sinfonia and Sinfonie Orchester Berlin, and performed recitals at the Ravinia Festival, Sarasota Opera House and National Gallery. He has also created residencies in Abu Dhabi, Mexico and Scotland.
He has participated in a number of festivals, from the Seattle Chamber Music and Mostly Mozart, to the Chamber Music Northwest and Barge Music. He has also recorded for Naxos, Nonesuch and Marquis Records.
A resident of Los Angeles since 2016, Kaplan is an active member of the piano faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles. As a member of Decoda—the affiliate ensemble of Carnegie Hall—he performs most frequently in venues across New York, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and National Sawdust.
“Kaplan has been called ‘excellent and adventurous’ by The New York Times and was praised by The Boston Globe for ‘grace and fire’ at the keyboard,” according to a press release.
Kaplan’s “Quasi Una Fantasia” gets its name from the original title of two sonatas by Beethoven: “Moonlight” and the “Sonata in E-flat Major.”
“The two Beethoven sonatas will frame music by Couperin, Brahms and Schumann, as well as more recent works by Ligeti, Anthony Cheung, Kaija Saariaho and Andrea Casarrubios,” the press release stated.
The February 10 concert will take place at St. Matthew’s Church in Pacific Palisades, located at 1031 Bienveneda Avenue. Tickets for the show are $35, and season passes for the remaining 2022-23 concerts are available for $75.
A pre-concert lecture, “Liner Notes with Tom Neenan,” will begin at 7:10 p.m., and is free and open to the public
