The Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine will begin an estimated yearlong renovation this month of its historic Windmill Chapel, a place where thousands have been introduced to the ancient science of yoga and meditation.
The renovation project, which will include major repairs to various aspects of the Chapel as well as upgrades crucial to the building’s safety and functionality, will ensure that this venerated sanctuary endures for future generations. The renovations, slated to begin on August 12, will continue for eight to 12 months.
During the renovation period, the Lake Shrine walking path that encircles the lake will continue to be open to the public (except for a short portion on either side of the Windmill Chapel location), as will many of the other areas, including the Gandhi World Peace Memorial and wall-less temple, Sunken Gardens and the museum and gift shop. However, the Windmill Chapel and the grounds adjacent to the chapel will be closed. The Court of Religions and the Visitor Center will be closed on weekdays only (Monday-Friday); but both of these areas will be open during regular visitor hours on Saturdays and Sundays.
The free weekly “Introduction to Meditation class,” which has been held for several years in the Windmill Chapel, will be moved to the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine Temple at 17080 Sunset, and will be held on Wednesdays (rather than Thursdays) from noon to 12:30 p.m., beginning on August 14. The Lake Shrine Temple will also be open for individual meditation Tuesdays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. (The Lake Shrine Temple bookstore will also be open at these times.)
The renovation project will include repairs caused by age and exposure to the elements. All of the roofs and window casings, the skylight, the windmill sails and many other parts of the building will be restored or replaced.
The structure will also be strengthened to withstand earthquakes, and various building elements crucial to the stability and longevity of the Windmill Chapel will be upgraded.
The Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine, a spiritual oasis of peace and calm, was established in 1950 by SRF founder Paramahansa Yogananda, who oversaw the development of the grounds after his society acquired the property in 1949. “You will see, later on this will be a pilgrimage place,” he said. “People will come from all over the world.” Today, the Lake Shrine hosts over 100,000 visitors a year from all over the world and from all faith traditions.
