If you haven’t noticed, Steven Spielberg has made every genre of film known to cinephiles. Whether it be prehistoric monsters in “Jurassic Park” or a platoon of inseparable soldiers in “Saving Private Ryan,” he has done it all.
But the king of creating a cinematic escape doesn’t seem anywhere close to being done as “Ready Player One,” a film about a virtual reality game in a dystopic 2045, is set to hit theaters on March 29.
The Riviera film mogul is no stranger to futurism as his previous works like “War of the Worlds” and “Artificial Intelligence” were both a success. If you question those as accomplishments, ask the person next to you if they have ever heard of “Minority Report.”
But the biggest appeal to viewers is probably what drove Spielberg to take on the project in the first place: a mesh of characters from other films. Because of a virtual reality world, the boundaries of such a film become infinite allowing characters like King Kong, Chucky, Batman and the T-Rex from “Jurassic Park” to be a part of the story.
Just when we thought Spielberg had done every kind of movie, he reminds us that he still has some tricks up his sleeve and plays to our nostalgia with a cornucopia of characters in one.
While we wrap our heads around that one, let’s have a moment of silence for the zero Oscars awarded to “The Post.”
