First place was on the line when the Palisades High girls soccer team hosted Hamilton in its Western League finale last Friday afternoon at Stadium by the Sea.
The Dolphins prevailed 2-1 in the schools’ previous encounter and took a 2-0 halftime lead in the rematch on goals by Sadie Holt and Jordan Darrow before surviving tense moments in the last 10 minutes to win by the same score.
“I ran onto a through ball, spun around and shot it bottom corner,” Holt said of her 16th goal (she and Darrow lead the team with 16 each). “We should’ve done better in the second half but we won, which should help our playoff seeding.”
Coach Christian Chambers expected Palisades to be No. 2 behind West Valley League champion El Camino Real, but that spot went to Northern League winner Sotomayor, dropping the Dolphins to No. 3 in the 20-team City Section Division I bracket. Palisades earned a first-round bye and hosts yesterday’s Taft-Arleta winner Friday at 3 p.m.
Palisades’ boys team had already clinched the league title before Friday’s 0-0 draw at Hamilton and the No. 8-seeded Dolphins host No. 9 Granada Hills in the second round of the Division I draw today. The winner could travel to top-seeded El Camino Real in the quarterfinals next Wednesday.
