After more than a decade of living on Maui, renowned writing coach and author Jasmyne Boswell has returned to her former home in Via Bluffs—swapping one flavor of paradise for another.
Boswell’s early career in marketing and advertising took her to great heights in Los Angeles, but it was ghostwriting as a marketer that sparked her love for putting pen to paper.
It wasn’t long before a course on enlightenment and inner peace based on Buddhist principles inspired her to write her own book, “What if the Problem’s Not the Problem?”
It was this experience that helped her better serve her clients who had dreams of being published, whether by a publishing house or on their own.
“I’m a writing coach, and I help people write their memoirs, whether they are for publication or leaving a legacy for their family,” she told the Palisadian-Post.
After the death of her parents, Boswell realized she was left with many unanswered questions, and she wished that they had written their own memoirs for her to treasure.
It was that pivotal moment where she realized the importance of memoir writing and wanted to help those who wanted to make a record of their lives, whether they knew where to begin or not.
She also assists those looking to write fiction, nonfiction, self-help, creative nonfiction, blogs and more.
“The newest thing I’m doing is helping people who really want to write, but English is their second language,” Boswell explained. “They can write their story, but I can put it in the proper language for the American market.”
She is known for skills in inspiring writers (or aspiring writers), and helping them create a clear vision and plan for their written work.
(Playing a James Boswell to their Dr. Samuel Johnson, if you like literary references.)
“Writing a book is like giving birth; everything about it, you create,” she shared. “The creativity that goes into doing something like [that] is so gratifying, and the funny thing is, anybody can do it.”
Helping writers find their voice and hone their craft has become the cornerstone of her career. Boswell offers workshops, one-on-one sessions and classes for writers of all levels.
Boswell said she finds that not seeing projects through to the end is the biggest challenge writers face, and her goal with her clients is to help them see the project through to the final product.
“A lot of my clients have been published, and I know they can do it,” Boswell said. “I have a passion for seeing people who want to do something and are finding resistance, and walking them through that process to get to the other side where the joy of doing it really hooks them.
“They find their creative muse and really start enjoying the process.”
Now she is out marketing, which started with a talk on “How to Write a Book and Get it Published” at the Palisades Branch Library.
