Nicki Schindler is about to experience the thrill of a lifetime, her reward for years of hard work and dedication to her chosen sport.
The 18-year-old Huntington resident was recently named to the 2016 U.S. Rowing Junior National Team and will compete in the women’s quadruple scull Aug. 21-28 at the Junior World Championships in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
The event will cap off a stellar junior rowing career for Schindler, who started at California Yacht Club in 2012 and has rowed on the CYC varsity for three years, winning gold in the double and silver in the quad at the 2015 Southwest Regionals in Florida. She and her double partner Bridget O’Callahan placed sixth in the Head of the Charles last October. This season, they took silver at the Southwest Regionals in New Jersey.
In May, Schindler received the $5,000 CYC Darling Family Scholastic Award for excellence in junior rowing. She graduated from Marlborough High in June and has been recruited to row at Stanford University, where she plans to pursue a degree in bioengineering.
