Richard “Dick” Burdette Winchester, 96, passed away Monday, Jan. 22, in Thousand Oaks, California.
Dick was born March 27, 1921, to Harry and Edith (Vorhees) Winchester in Manhattan, Kansas, the oldest of three children. He graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in chemical engineering in 1941 and obtained a master’s degree from Harvard Business School in 1949.
Dick was a captain in the Army Air Corps in WWII, serving as a meteorologist in Alaska. He met his beautiful bride, Nancy Jane Ziesmer, after the war, and they married in 1947 in Mankato, Minnesota.
In 1949 Dick began an engineering career with Honeywell, followed by TRW and Texas Instruments. In 1963 he began a second career as an entrepreneur and financial advisor, successfully managing several business and real estate development projects. Dick and Nancy, along with their family, lived in Pacific Palisades from 1960 to 2008.
In his retirement years, Dick enjoyed researching family genealogy. Dick, along with Nancy, had a passion to travel the world, including to the UK, India for the wedding of close friends and the Israel avocado congress, to mention a few. They also enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Dick was active in Rotary International for over 50 years and was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow.
Dick is survived by his daughter, Liz (Jim) Allen; son, Tom (Janis) Winchester; son, Andy (Jill) Winchester; grandchildren, Katie and CJ Allen, Sean, Brian and Ryen Winchester; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, wife Nancy and brothers Ken Winchester and Burdette Winchester.
Interment will be in the columbarium at The Parish of St. Matthew in Pacific Palisades.
