Wideout Quincy Cowherd talks about his role in the Dolphins’ passing game.
Snap by snap, practice by practice and game by game, Palisades High junior quarterback P.J. Hurst is developing a better rapport with his receivers. Hurst claims they make him look good while they might argue it’s the other way around.
One thing they all agree on, however, is that the Dolphins’ passing game has taken flight and Hurst has several reliable targets in his huddle capable of making plays when their number is called. With visiting University playing man-to-man coverage Friday night it was up to Quincy Cowherd to exploit that on the outside– and the senior wideout responded with three catches for 39 yards and two touchdowns.
“They play a man defense so they know I’ll be there on the outside and if P.J. throws it up I’ll go and get it — that was the plan,” said Cowherd, who jumped high to snare his second touchdown despite a defender’s hand in his face, then got his feet down in the right corner of the end zone. “We go through everything we’re going to do in practice, we all study it together, we know what routes to run to beat the coverage, I know where P.J. wants the ball, he knows where I like the ball and that’s the way it is with all the receivers. We have great chemistry.”
Cowherd has 14 catches for 285 yards and a team-high five touchdown receptions this season and he believes the best is yet to come. He and his fellow wide receivers have another chance to make their quarterback ‘look good’ Friday afternoon at first-place Hamilton and the Dolphins are pumped about the matchup.
“Every game from here on out is a must-win for us, so we’re going to treat it like if we lose we’re going home,” Cowherd said. “We’re going to go hard like tonight and if we do we’ll prevail.”
