A power outage on Wednesday, Dec. 16 plunged many Palisadians into darkness for nearly two hours, closing businesses early and sending students from schools in the Village outside for classes.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) de-energized one of its receiving stations after a circuit breaker caused a small fire. The equipment failed at 1:37 p.m. and a portion of the receiving station that services the affected areas was de-energized about 10 minutes later, according to DWP spokeswoman Ellen Cheng. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded but the fire was already extinguished by the time the firefighters arrived, according to an LAFD spokesperson.
The station served Pacific Palisades, Westwood and other areas of West LA, affecting about 27,000 customers including those in the Village, Alphabet Streets, El Medio Bluffs, Huntington, Via Bluffs and Castellammare. Traffic lights throughout the Palisades were out, causing traffic backup in some areas. DWP crews restored power around 3:30 p.m., returning the Palisades to a normal routine.
