United States Postal Service officials stood in the lobby of the annex building on La Cruz Drive last week to gather public comment about the closing of the Sunset Blvd. branch.
“The two facilities are very close together, about a tenth of a mile,” said Richard Maher, USPS spokesperson.
“The community is already used to coming here. This used to be the post office and they still come here to pick up packages,” Maher added.
All of the customer service amenities, including hundreds of P.O. boxes, will be relocated to the La Cruz building after it has been remodeled to accommodate customers, Maher said.
Some people, like Joyce Walter, voiced their concerns over parking. Walter is a senior with a lot of friends who have mobility problems.
“I remember when they moved there and a lot of people didn’t like it,” Walter said.
“There is a parking garage under it, but it’s not that easy to access,” Walter added. “So I think that people were upset at the time it moved there. We were all so used to coming here. Anytime there’s a change, it’s tough. I understand the post office needs to save some money and they’re paying high rents there for all that space. If they can come back here and make use of the space, I think it’s fine.”
Michelle Peffer thinks the annex is an easier location to visit than Sunset and she’s looking forward to the move. “In fact, I’ve avoided getting stamps because it’s so tricky finding parking there,” Peffer said.
