“Piggy Nation, the Musical,” written by Palisadian Richard Rosser, begins Off-Broadway preview at the Snapple Theater Center on 50th Street in Manhattan on March 9, with an official opening March 24.
The musical, which premiered as a Theatre Palisades Youth production at Pierson Playhouse in February 2011, was based on Rosser’s children’s book, “Piggy Nation: A Day at Work With Dad,” which deals with selfish and rude behavior in a humorous fashion.
Rosser, who earned his master’s degree in film production from New York University and has worked on several Nickelodeon shows, watched his children perform in Jeff Lantos’ stage productions at Marquez Elementary. This inspired him to create a musical. He was challenged by TPY director Dorothy Dillingham Blue to finish the show in time for the 2011 spring production.
Rosser collaborated with Alex Wells, who wrote the score for the 75-minute family show that includes blues, rock, rap and gospel.
