“Finch,” an Apple original sci-fi film starring Palisadian Tom Hanks, will be available to stream on Apple TV+ beginning Friday, November 5.
Hanks plays the eponymous Finch, a robotics engineer, as he embarks on a “moving and powerful” journey to find a home and caretaker for his four-legged, beloved dog Goodyear and survive a new post-apocalyptic world, according to Apple.
“The science-fiction drama takes place after a solar flare that devastated life on earth. Finch … has been surviving a post-apocalyptic wasteland for a decade in an underground bunker, where he lives with his dog Goodyear—a very good boy and Finch’s only companion after the catastrophic event,” according to a synopsis from The Verge. “In this underground workspace, Finch develops a robot, Jeff, with whom they’ll embark on a treacherous journey to beat a deadly storm to safety. Along the way, they’ll have to navigate extreme weather phenomena, merciless heat, UV radiation and other unexpected challenges.”
Hanks is joined by a cast made up of Caleb Landry Jones, Lora Martinez-Cunningham, Marie Wagenman, Oscar Avila and more.
The release of “Finch” marks the second for Hanks on the streaming service, who previously starred in Apple TV+’s “Greyhound,” which was acquired from Sony. “Greyhound” was nominated for a number of awards, including an Academy Award for best sound and turned in strong viewing numbers as Apple TV+’s most watched film, according to Deadline.
The film is directed by Emmy Award-winner Miguel Sapochnik, who previously helmed episodes of “Game of Thrones,” from an original screenplay by Craig Luck and Ivor Powell, associate producer of “Blade Runner” and “Alien.” It is produced by Kevin Misher, Jack Rapke, Jacqueline Levine and Powell. The executive producers of the film are Robert Zemeckis, Luck, Sapochnik, Andy Berman and Adam Merims.
“Finch”—previously titled “Bios”—also changed distributors and premiere dates: The film was originally going to be released by Universal Pictures in theaters in October 2020, but was later acquired by Apple TV+ in August 2021.
“Finch,” which is rated PG-13 for brief violent images, has a runtime of one hour and 55 minutes.
