Spoilers ahead …
If you’ve been enjoying Hulu’s reboot “How I Met Your Father,” have you noticed local Leighton Meester in the show? The “How I Met Your Mother” spin-off premiered on January 18.
The “Gossip Girl” star made her debut in the pilot episode after Sophie (Hilary Duff) meets Jesse (Chris Lowell), and Sophie learns about his cynicism when it comes to love. Jesse reveals that he went viral for a failed proposal to his girlfriend and bandmate Meredith (Meester), which backfired and left him a bit broken … and a standing joke.
“What a loser,” someone in the audience said.
He explains that Meredith was the only one he has ever loved and he was left rejected, while she left for Europe to record her first solo album.
The cameo left viewers wondering if she would return in future episodes—and she has.
Meester returns as Meredith for the second half of the season. She abruptly arrives at Jesse’s apartment to speak with him and eventually reveals that she has written a single about him.
She explains that she needed to find herself outside of a relationship, but regrets breaking up with Jesse and offers him a position on her upcoming tour—Right before Jesse’s first official date with Sophie.
The final episode, which aired on March 15, left viewers puzzled: After assuring Sophie that he had strong feelings for her and turned down Meredith’s offer, Sophie finds Jesse in Meredith’s arms and begins to question their relationship entirely.
Now, viewers have to wait for the second season to find out what happens between Meredith and Jesse, and Jesse and Sophie.
Hulu confirmed in February that “How I Met Your Father” will return for a second season with double the number of episodes. A release date has not been set for the show’s 20-episode season two.
