Since the release of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” fans have not been able to get enough of Baby Groot. Now, they have the opportunity to dig deeper into the life of the tree of three words. Disney released “I Am Groot,” a five-episode miniseries on Disney+, on Wednesday, August 10—produced by Palisadian and President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige.
Groot—a tree-like figure—was introduced in “Guardians of the Galaxy” and captured the world by storm with his catchphrase: “I am Groot.” His catchphrase is his only line through the series of films, staying true to his character in the original comics. Only Groot’s friends Rocket and Thor can make out what he wishes to say through his single line.
Spoiler alert: The death of Groot was a heartbreaking moment for Marvel fans as he sacrificed his life in defense of his friends in the first film. But the Guardians planted a piece of him and thus, Baby Groot was born.
The “I Am Groot” series follows Baby Groot—voiced by Vin Diesel—from seedling to Guardian of the Galaxy, through his adventures and interactions with several new and unusual characters.
Palisadian Bradley Cooper joins Groot as the voice of Rocket for one of the five episodes.
“It’s not just about the funny, it’s not just about the action, it’s about the heart,” Feige said to Collider about the “Guardians of the Galaxy” series. “And the amount of heart that you get out of this trash panda raccoon and now this little twig Baby Groot is awe-inspiring.”
The series is produced by Marvel Studios, with Kirsten Lepore, animation director for “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On,” serving as head writer and director.
At a Marvel panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego this year, Lepore revealed that she was inspired by her son for the show, looking at normal and core moments of his childhood through a sci-fi lens.
All five episodes were released simultaneously, with a runtime of three minutes each. Palisadians can catch “I Am Groot” exclusively on Disney+.
