From the stage of Pierson Playhouse to world-renowned roles in cinema and television, Amy Adams returns as Giselle in a new Disney+ feature, “Disenchanted.”
A sequel to the 2007 success “Enchanted,” the musical is set to dazzle audiences starting Thanksgiving week, exclusively on the streaming site.
Piggybacking off the success of its predecessor, “Disenchanted” will lean more heavily toward a musical. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Adams, who got her start in the industry with Theatre Palisades, explained that Giselle will sing in the new film—which was absent in the original.
“That was the grossest oversight, her never singing in the first one,” Adams said. “She sings twice, and I couldn’t be happier.”
Adams shared she is “ecstatic” to resume her role as Giselle.
“It was such a big part of my life,” she said, “it was so important to me.”
After receiving Oscar nominations in the Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures category for their work in “Enchanted,” Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz return for the sequel alongside actors Patrick Dempsey, Idina Menzel, James Marsden and Maya Rudolph. Directed by Adam Shankman, the film’s tone will remain satirical, but the focus of the film shifts.
While the first poked fun at the princess genre, “Disenchanted” focuses on the “happily ever after” troupe that plagues princess films of the past and present.
In her interview with Entertainment Weekly, Adams revealed that things evolved between her character Giselle and Robert Phillip (Dempsey) after 10 years of marriage. With their family bursting at the seams, Giselle decides to relocate the family to the countryside, which displeases their teenage daughter, Morgan.
Leaving behind a world of magic—on top of familial unrest—appearing in the trailer, Giselle has doubts that her ending was truly “happily ever after.”
With a runtime of two hours, “Disenchanted” will be streamed exclusively on Disney+ beginning Thursday, November 24.
