Living alone in old age and all the complications that come with it was the central focus at the latest Palisades Alliance for Seniors meeting on Monday, Aug. 22.
The discussion was led by Phyllis Press, a psychotherapist and an instructor at Emeritus College teaching classes on living alone at an older age and coping with bereavement. The meeting was the second part to the topic of living alone that was initiated at the previous Palisades Alliance meeting. Press explained that the topic is so vast that it requires discussion on multiple levels.
Press addressed a group of Palisadian seniors about the “new normal” after many lose a long-time spouse or partner.
In the many developmental stages in life, the stage of “single again” often gets overlooked, Press explained of the self-titled life stage that occurs in older age.
“It doesn’t come with directions,” Press said to the group.
Press reminded the attendees that although loneliness can be overwhelming at times, they are never the only ones experiencing the transition.
Press discussed various changes that might occur during the transition to single living, both daily tasks such as taking out the garbage and bigger responsibilities like getting a vehicle serviced. Attendees shared examples of their own experiences and asked Press for advice on various issues, from interacting with adult children to relying on friendships.
The next Palisades Alliance meeting will be on Sept. 12 and focus on “Home Modification and Adaptation.”
