The Palisades Podcast, hosted by longtime community members Steve Cron and Maryam Zar, will welcome Justice Arthur Gilbert for their June guest.
“Virtually every lawyer in California knows about Art Gilbert and his storied career as a lawyer, a judge for the Los Angeles Municipal and Superior Courts, and his 37-year career as a justice on the California Court of Appeal,” Cron shared ahead of the episode. “They will also know him for the scholarship, eloquence and clarity of his opinions.”
Gilbert, a resident of the Palisades since 1976, counts himself as one of the lucky ones who made the choice to live in the community almost 45 years ago, Cron said.
“He is truly a Renaissance man, who has a keen wit, an unending thirst for knowledge, and a love of life that is infectious to all of us who are lucky enough to call him our friend,” Cron said.
For 31 years, Gilbert has been the author of a monthly column, “Under Submission,” for the Los Angeles Daily Journal. He has also written two books—“Under Submission” and “Under Submission Volume II”—both of which have been widely praised, Cron explained. Gilbert has donated all the profits from the books to the Los Angeles County Law Library.
Gilbert is currently the Presiding Justice of Division 6 of the California Court of Appeal, Second District.
In a 2016 interview with the Palisadian-Post, Gilbert described himself and his cohorts on the Court of Appeal as the “think tank in tank tops” because the justices usually dress casually—tank tops, T-shirts and shorts—under their robes.
Throughout the course of his career, he has received awards for judicial excellence from a wide variety of bar associations and fellow judges. He has also lectured to judges throughout California, as well as Eastern Europe.
“But, Art Gilbert is so much more than an outstanding jurist,” Cron shared. “Justice Gilbert is also an accomplished jazz pianist who has enthusiastically pursued his lifetime musical career while working full-time in the courts.”
Gilbert has played at the Disney Hall, Library of Congress and jazz clubs across Southern California. He currently is a member of the Big Band of Barristers, playing the piano. The group recently won first place as the best lawyer band in the country at the Chicago Art Institute.
“His wife, Barbara, a gifted soprano, often sings with Art, currently along with a singing group, the Singers in Law,” Cron added.
The June episode of the podcast will offer a glimpse into the many facets that fulfill the life of Gilbert.
