Palisadian seniors met on Monday, June 25, to learn how fitness and strength training belong in every general health routine. Fifty-eight people attended.
Kendrick Hughes, a former pro-athlete turned trainer, stepped away from his schedule at the Palisades-Malibu YMCA to offer tips and instructions.
He has been working in sports fitness for over 20 years, and specializes in rehabilitation and post-operative physical care. He understands the various issues that can stem from diseases and disabilities associated with advanced age.
“Walking is the best bone-thickening exercise,” Hughes said in the lecture portion. “One should try to gradually increase one’s walking distance.”
He expressed that doing a bone density test is a good idea, as is an assessment of one’s overall fitness level. He outlined the endless benefits of exercising.
“Exercising brings cardiopulmonary benefits, increases muscular strength, endurance and flexibility, improves bone density, and decreases osteoporosis.”
Instructor Carlos Janos was also in attendance to lead the group in a chair exercise. He’s a performer who incorporates music and dance into his routines to develop physical and mental fitness in seniors.
“I recommend that seniors should listen to their favorite music while exercising,” Janos told the Palisadian-Post.
Weight-bearing and strength resistance exercises were discussed in the group, being key factors in protecting against common conditions (such as osteoporosis).
“After a good warm up, seniors should work on strength training of the major muscle groups in the body for 15 minutes with the use of hand weights or objects they can safely hold in their hands,” Janos shared.
Developing a personal exercise program is important for all ages, and it absolutely must continue into senior-hood.
“The end benefits of a regular exercise program for seniors are: more strength and energy to go about your daily activities, a feeling of well being and accomplishment, increased self-esteem, and a more positive outlook on life,” Janos said.
The Palisades Alliance for Seniors is run by Palisadian seniors. The group hosts regular programs designed to ensure that seniors continue living a safe, healthy and productive life.
Next on the agenda is “Writing Your Personal History” on July 9, followed by “Medical Cannabis Therapies” on July 23.
