In the fall Kalea Martin and Alex Miller helped Palisades High’s girls tennis team win the inaugural City Section Open Division title.
On Sunday, they found themselves on opposite sides of the net in the Girls 16 singles final of the California Tennis Association’s West Coast Spring Tournament at Rancho Cienega Park. Finally, after almost two and a half hours’ worth of long baseline rallies, Martin prevailed, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4.
Miller, who paired with Caroline Ross to win the City Individual doubles title in December, won her semifinal match, 6-2, 6-3, over Alexandra Cohen. Martin upset top-seeded Charlize Dianne Panganiban, 6-2, 6-1, in her semifinal.
Martin, a freshman, partnered with Keynon Thompkins to win the Girls 16 doubles at the Dudley Cup Junior Open in Santa Monica.
After losing in three sets to Ross and Miller in the semifinals, Martin and partner Maddy Goore outlasted Cleveland’s Jay Lee and Victoria Kaplan 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to take third at City Individuals.
