The Palisades High girls softball team had to wait a long time to play its first game this spring, but when the Dolphins took the field last Thursday at Stadium by the Sea they looked like a force to be reckoned with, routing Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies 18-1 in five innings.
Kharlee Sanders and Briana Vasquez combined to strike out 10 batters in the circle on the way to no-hitting the Unicorns, while on offense Stella Honda and Makena Reiss both blasted home runs as the Dolphins put up seven runs in the first inning, three in the second inning, five in the third inning and three in the fourth. They did not bat in the fifth as the game was halted by way of the 10-run rule. Jaya Manigo had four hits.
“Since last year I’ve worked a lot on my strength, velocity and spin rate,” said Vasquez, who pitched the last three innings, striking out seven of the nine batters she faced, and did more damage at the plate with a single, a double, four RBIs and three runs scored. “I want to be stronger for those extra long games. I think we’re a really good defensive team.”
Honda scored on a solo inside-the-park homer in the second and one inning later Reiss launched a two-run shot over the right-center field fence.
