The Palisades High girls golf team clinched its first-ever Western League championship last Friday at Balboa Golf Course in Encino.
The Golfin’ Dolphins improved to 20-0 and have won each of the first five league matches (the first four at Penmar). The team was led by sophomore captain Melanie Matayoshi, who shot 8 over par. Palisades shot 259 over nine holes, University was second at 358 and Westchester was third with a score of 422.
Neither LACES nor Venice had enough players to factor in the team scoring. Caitlin Sasamori of Venice and Kara Temena of University tied for medalist honors at +2.
Palisades carded a 242, its lowest round ever, in the third league match and bettered that with a 233 the following Friday, as four players scored in the 40s, led by Matayoshi’s 43.
The sixth and final league match is this afternoon at Balboa and league finals are next Thursday at 10 a.m. at Balboa. The City Section finals are Nov. 2, also at Balboa.
