In a way, the playoffs have already begun for the Palisades High boys varsity soccer team. The Dolphins began the week in third place in the Western League standings behind Hamilton and Fairfax, but Monday’s 4-1 win against University at Stadium by the Sea coupled with Hamilton’s 3-3 draw with LACES kept the glimmer of hope alive for Palisades to retain its league title.
The Dolphins still need a lot to go their way in order to overtake Hamilton, starting with yesterday’s game against last-place Venice. Palisades travels to Fairfax tomorrow with the winner taking over sole possession of second place. Palisades won the first encounter 4-1 in December.
Shane Thomas scored twice against University, including the only goal of the first half. Mika Moreira scored to make it 3-0, but the Wildcats scored off a corner kick with six minutes left and would have pulled even closer but for big saves by goalkeeper Eric Palermo. Then, Greg Rachal tallied the clinching goal.
Meanwhile, the Pali High girls squad continued to roll through league with a 10-1 win at University. Freshman Hannah Kalt scored four goals while Ava Kerkorian, Sienna Ozar, Sierra Clarke, Dylan Tzung, Izzy Gill and Giah Holman each had one.Palisades hosts Fairfax on Friday and visits LACES on Monday.
