Tai Chi Offered at Park

During the opening ceremonies at the Beijing Olympics, 2008 individuals performed tai chi in perfect unison. Throughout China every day, more than 10 million people practice some type of tai chi, a system of calisthenics involving sequences of slow, controlled movements based on martial arts. Last Friday, at an ongoing tai chi class in the ‘old’ gym at the Palisades Recreation Center, participants began the movements without instructor Matt Rand, who was delayed by traffic for the 10 a.m. class. ‘He said we’re supposed to practice on our own,’ said Joan Graves, who stopped tai chi several years ago after her instructor moved away, but has started again with Rand. Said Chris Van Scoyk, who has been practicing for two years: ‘Tai chi is supposed to help with balance and memory. It took me over a year to learn one section.’ The memory aspect is instantly obvious as exercisers must remember 37 distinct movements and blend them into one another in a seamless fashion. The 12 people in the weekly class had already gone through one section of the slow set (there are two different sets’slow and fast) when Rand arrived. He then led the class through various moves, occasionally showing a participant how a posture should be held. When practiced regularly, tai chi’s slow moving, weight-shifting movements and soothing circular stretches exercise every part of the body without exertion, says Rand, who began practicing tai chi 14 years ago. He has taught for the Department of Recreation and Parks in Pacific Palisades the past four years, and also teaches for L.A. Unified Adult schools and at Stoner Park. ‘I really try to make the class ongoing, so anyone can sign up at any time,’ Rand said. For beginners in the class, he teaches movement by movement. ‘If people are having a good time, having fun, then they keep coming.’ Senior citizen Jack Garrett started classes a few months ago. ‘It is interesting, something to look forward to, and good exercise,’ he said. ‘I first saw it 20 years ago in Beijing in the public parks.’ Van Scoyk added, ‘I did tai chi going on a boat down the Yangtze.’ Tai chi has been described as meditation in motion. The quiet during last Friday’s class was noticeable and refreshing, as participants concentrated on remembering and moving with a smooth flow. Holding movements and positioning them is not as easy as it looks. The next three-month session starts October 3 and the cost is $120. Sign up at the park.

Nutrition Expert Shares Her Weight-Loss Strategy

Certified nutritionist Karen Cohen pulled out a photograph of herself as a chubby little girl with wispy curls. ‘People never believe me,’ the slender Cohen says, ‘but I used to be overweight.’ Cohen, 62, weighed 165 pounds when she was 12 years old. ‘I have had weight problems my whole life. I understand how difficult it is to lose weight and keep it off,’ says Cohen, who works with clients at Oasis Palisades, a health and wellness center at 16074 Bollinger Dr. in Pacific Palisades that also offers acupuncture and massage. As a child, a physician gave her diet pills causing her to lose 10 pounds in a summer, but she simply gained weight again. As a teenager, she recorded her calories and daily exercise. By doing so, she lost weight and kept it off. Cohen helps people change their lifestyle by teaching them about calories, serving sizes, healthy foods and more. She works with clients who have conditions such as cancer, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, eating disorders, food allergies or digestive disorders. Cohen also helps pregnant women, new mothers and menopausal women develop an appropriate diet plan. ‘I’m a lifestyle coach,’ Cohen says. ‘The educator, the motivator, the supporter.’ Cohen meets with clients at the grocery store to help them analyze labels, or she comes to their homes to examine the contents of their cupboards and refrigerator. She suggests nutrition shakes, vitamins and supplements. ‘I work with individuals,’ she says. ‘I do everything custom to the person.’ Cohen, who has two grown children, Jill Lasky and Tracy Shabsis, and three grandchildren, decided to become a nutritionist after suffering from cancer for a third time. ‘I wanted to move into a career that was closer to my heart,’ she says. She had previously worked for Bank of America for 15 years, climbing the company’s ladder. She was manager of Bank of America in Pacific Palisades from 1991 to 1993 and her last position was in human resources for the Southern California region. In 2000, she was diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time. She had breast cancer before in 1989 and uterine cancer in 1982. During treatment for her second breast cancer, she was prescribed medicine that caused her to gain weight, so she met with a nutritionist who simply handed her a list of items to eat. ‘I lacked the education to know why I had to eat these foods,’ she says. ‘I wanted to know why in order to make a lifestyle change.’ Cohen decided then that she wanted to help people understand how certain foods affect their health. ‘I educate and support everyone whom I work with.’ After enrolling in American Health Science University based in Aurora, Colorado, Cohen earned her degree in nutrition science in 2004. She trained with the American Heart Association, where she developed a nutritional program for children to address the increasing number of obese children nationwide. ‘Because of my own experience, I took this project on with great enthusiasm,’ Cohen says. ‘Growing up can be difficult in its own right, but when you add ridicule and rejection, childhood can be a nightmare. I believe that if we reach our children early on, we can help them develop behaviors that will protect them from cardiovascular diseases and other long-term physical and emotional threats to their health.’ Cohen also completed FirstLine Therapy Certification through the Metagenics Education Program and is an active member of the National Association of Nutrition Professionals. When Cohen meets with clients for the first time, she does a digital body analysis, which measures lean muscle, cell health, hydration level, body fat and the number of calories her clients burn at rest. From that information, she can figure out the appropriate calorie intake based on their body composition and physical activity level. She also inquires about medical history and goals before developing a customized diet and exercise plan. For those interested in losing weight, Cohen doesn’t suggest a ‘fad diet’ or cutting out certain foods to drop pounds quickly. A safe weight-loss plan is one to two pounds a week. New mothers who are breastfeeding should lose weight at a slower rate because they are providing nutrients for their baby. ‘People should be eating all the food groups (protein, fat and complex carbohydrates) to get the nutrients they need,’ Cohen says. ‘Study after study has shown that people who eat from all the food groups lose their weight and keep it off. Cutting back too many calories may lead to overeating once a goal is met.’ Cohen asks her clients to journal, so they can be honest about the foods they eat. ‘I always say fudging is worse than having a piece of fudge,’ she says, chuckling. She loves to hear that her clients experience an improvement in their health. ‘When people actually make a change, they start feeling better about themselves in every aspect of their lives. The most successful people are 100 percent committed,’ Cohen says. To make an appointment, e-mail learn2eatright@yahoo.com or call (310) 444-9755.

Pali Teams Open Seasons

The Palisades High girls’ tennis and volleyball teams began their respective seasons as City champions. Whether either holds that title in November remains to be seen, but both look to make a statement early. The tennis team, under the leadership of new head coach Sean Passan, traveled north on Pacific Coast Highway to begin its campaign against Malibu on Tuesday in the first round of the Bay Area Classic (result unavailable at press time). “I’m still tinkering with the lineup,” Passan admitted. “I’ll probably change it around depending on who we’re playing.” Palisades returns home Friday, where it will host Marymount in an intersectional match at the Palisades Tennis Center. The Dolphins then head for Manhattan Beach to take on Mira Costa next Monday in the second round of the Bay Area Classic. Meanwhile, the volleyball team, led by 2007 City Coach of the Year Chris Forrest, played Carson in a scrimmage Tuesday and head for Gahr High in Cerritos on Friday and Saturday for the first two rounds of the Gahr tournament. The tournament continues next Monday and Wednesday. “It’s always hard to defend your championship but my outlook is very positive,” Forrest said. “I like what I’ve seen in practice and I think this team will be very good.” The girls golf team began its season Wednesday, taking on LACES, Venice and Narbonne in a 1A League match at Penmar Golf Course.

Festas Make Marks in France

Rich Festa (left) keeps a watchful eye on his son Tony and Greg Dair at the European Championships off the coast of St. Malo, France.

Palisadian Tony Festa is quick to point out he doesn’t speak French. When it comes to competitive sailing, however, he is fluent in winning and knows the “language of the sea.” That was proven last month when he competed against many of the world’s top sailors. Festa and his crew, consisting of his 14-year-old son Tony and his friend, 16-year-old Greg Dair from the California Yacht Club, were invited to race in St. Malo, France, for the European Championship by Phileas, manufacturer of the Open 570 boat that they race. Phileas helped the American trio, which won the Pacific Coast championship of the USA Open 570 fleet, get a boat to race in the mid-August event and off they went. “After spending a couple of days sightseeing in Paris we rented a car and drove 400 kilometers to St. Malo, where the race took place,” Rich recalled. “On the fourth day we rigged the boat and went out for a practice sail. Thank God we did a test sail because the boat had some major rigging issues which we fixed back at the dock.” St. Malo, a small town rebuilt after the bombings in World War II, is located about 100 kilometers south of Normandy Beach on the west coast of France. Finally, on the fifth day of the trip, Team Festa got to do what it had come to do. The first buoy race started in a calm 8-knot breeze and the first boats around the mark took advantage of the better wind. That group included the Festas, who by day’s end found themselves tied for fifth place out of 28 boats in the international field. “In the first race we got a good, clear start and decided to stay on the right side of the course, which turned out to be the favored side,” Rich recalled. “The wind got light on the downwind leg and we made some good tactical decisions and finished fifth, just a half of a boat length behind the winner. “In the second race of the day, we got a fantastic start and tacked to port immediately where we found plenty of room to maneuver which allowed us to sail fast and beat all but one boat to the windward mark,” Rich continued. “Unfortunately, the current at the mark was extremely strong and we had to make many uncalled for tacks to avoid hitting the mark. The local boats, meanwhile, sailed high and wide of the mark, playing the current perfectly as they passed us. We caught the fleet on the downwind leg and finished a respectable 10th.” The second day of competition was a painful one for Rich and a frustrating one on the waves. The first of four races was going according to plan until a mishap occurred after rounding the first mark. “Tony and Greg set the spinnaker and I jibed immediately only to get hit in the nose accidentally by Greg’s elbow while he was pulling in the spinnaker sheets in the 20-knot winds,” Rich recalled. “With a broken nose and stars spinning around my head I tried to hold it together, but 15 boats passed us.” Team Festa found itself poorly positioned in the second race and finished towards the rear of the fleet. In races 3 and 4 the trio was mid-fleet or better, but too many spots had been lost in the first two races. On the final day of racing, the language barrier proved to be the biggest obstacle for Team Festa. Unbeknownst to Rich, the race committee decided to push up the starting time of the first race because of 30-foot tides. “We realized that the race was starting sooner than we expected and I was quite upset since we were only about three minutes from the starting line,” Rich said. “Tony and Greg calmed me down as we sucked it up and raced, but of course we finished last.” In the eighth and final race, not knowing the lingo once again proved costly for America’s team. “This was a long distance race, not a buoy race, and we had no idea where we were going since the directions were in French,” Rich explained. “We followed the fleet and finished 12th, not bad considering we had no idea where the marks were or where the finish line was!” Two more days of sightseeing followed before Rich and his young crewmates headed back to California. Tony and Greg were the youngest participants in the race. “The French were very friendly and watching their reaction when they saw the USA sail number on our boat was quite amusing,” said Rich, who has vowed to learn French before next year’s race. “That way I can make it to the starting line on time!” (Editor’s note: Rich Festa has been a State Farm agent in the Palisades for over 23 years and is married to former Miss Palisades and lifelong resident Jeanne Elfant Festa.)

Dolphins Lay It All on the Line

Change is in the air at Stadium by the Sea. It may share the same name and wear the same colors, but the Palisades High team that takes the field for tomorrow night’s season opener against Hollywood is not the varsity squad that went 1-9 last fall. “We’re better in all facets of the game,” second-year Head Coach Kelly Loftus said. “The collective intelligence of this team is high and what I like best is that we haven’t had one behavioral issue yet. This is a really dedicated group of young men.” Loftus boldly lobbied to put Palisades in the upper division playoffs of the City Section playoffs’partly to motivate his players and partly because he truly believes the Dolphins can compete at the higher level. “Given where we were last year I’d be satisfied with 5-5 but I think we should be able to win six games and play someone tough in the playoffs,” he said. “I’ll be disappointed if we don’t do that.” Along with that dedication is a roster full of potential’players on both sides of the ball who are eager to prove themselves. Of course, a team can go only as far as its quarterback takes it and the Dolphins figure to go far under sophomore signal-caller Conner Preston, who impressed both his coaches and college scouts at summer camps with his accuracy and poise in the pocket. Preston also demonstrated the ability to grasp a new offense quickly after offensive coordinator Larry Wein resigned for good last week. In fact, he and his receivers got a 20-minute “chalk talk” session in the locker room prior to the Dolphins’ scrimmage against Washington last Thursday. “I thought we did great under the circumstances,” Preston said. “Give us one more week of work and we’re going to be clicking.” Backing up Preston at quarterback is junior Preon Morgan, who will double as a wide receiver and cornerback. “Preon’s a very capable back-up who gives us a little bit of a different look,” Loftus said. “He runs the ball more like a running back.” Not only has Preston been sharp in practice, so too have his receivers’particularly his primary targets, Joe Hyman, Trevon Jimenez, Loren Artis and Tanqueray Towns. Towns, a 5′ 7,’ 140-pound senior, said he and his teammates enjoyed playing at home on Thursday and look forward to giving their fans plenty to cheer about again Friday night. “The intensity Thursday night was higher than at any time last year,” Towns said. “I have a lot of faith in this team. It’s important for us to prove the Palisades of this year is different than the Palisades of last year.” In fact, Towns has even higher expectations than his coach. “We have all the potential in the world,” he said. “There’s not a team on our schedule we can’t beat. I’d be satisfied with 8-2 or 7-3 at the worst.” Towns also praised Palisades’ offensive line, which will be anchored by tackles Bryce Williams and David Arzumanov, guards Juan Climaco and Chris Chukwuocha and center Joe Brandon. Standing 6’2′ and weighing 310 pounds, Williams has improved his conditioning week in and week out. He will give Preston ample time to throw and he’ll open plenty of holes for Palisades’ stable of running backs, led by Khalid Stevens, Bobby Powell and Tyquion Ballard. Wein’s departure so close to the start of the season advanced the players’ learning curve, but Loftus said that could prove beneficial in the long run: “We haven’t abandoned what Larry taught them. Some of what he used we’ll keep. Right now, I think we’ll start with a 60 to 40 run-pass ratio but my goal is to get be about 50-50 by the team league rolls around.” Palisades should score more points than it did last fall, but the real strength of this year’s team could be the defense. Employing a 50 front and using a lot of Cover 3 zone, the Dolphins expect to force a lot of turnovers like they did against Washington when they recovered three fumbles. “The biggest thing I took from that scrimmage is the way our defense flew to the ball and the kids’ overall hunger,” said Loftus, who credited Dominic Hampton with providing stability as defensive coordinator after the resignation of Donnell Williams three weeks ago. “The kids have really responded to him,” Loftus said of Hampton. “Our defense won’t have a lot of wrinkles. We need to work on our tackling but I like the fact that our guys were at least in position to make the tackle.” Palisades was not allowed to work on special teams during last Thursday’s scrimmage, so Loftus devoted much of Friday’s practice to kick coverage. Artis will handle the punting while sophomore Alex Anastacio will most likely handle the placekicking duties. “Alex has been making 35-yard field goals consistently in practice but he needs to be quicker on his approach to the ball,” Loftus said. “He’s also been kicking 45 to 50 percent of his kickoffs into the end zone.” The Dolphins were confident of a turnaround season before they played Washington, but their efforts in that 30-play-per-side scrimmage boosted team morale even more. Though the Generals had an advantage in yards gained and outscored the Dolphins 3-2 (one of their touchdowns was called back on a penalty), Palisades forced more turnovers and was more effective in the red zone, scoring on a 10-yard strike from Preston to Hyman. “That team was rated 15th in the pre-season and we were 23rd out of 23 teams in the playoffs,” Loftus said. “So I’m pleased that we were able to hold our own against them. That team is better than a lot of the teams on our schedule.” Several of Palisades’ future opponents played last Friday night and Loftus and his coaches kept close attention. Western League champion Venice lost at home to San Fernando while Granada Hills’Palisades’ Week 4 opponent’trounced Monroe. “Right now, our focus is on Hollywood,” Bryce Williams insisted. “That’s our first game and I don’t want to look ahead.” Starting with Friday night’s game, the Dolphins open the season with six straight at Stadium by the Sea–in direct contrast to last season when the Dolphins played only one home game. The toughest games figure to be against intersectional opponents Santa Monica and Peninsula, the annual “Charter Bowl” against Granada Hills and their Western League showdown against Venice. Palisades beat Hollywood, 22-2, in last year’s opener’a victory that was later forfeited when it was discovered the Dolphins had used an ineligible player. Frosh/Soph Palisades and Washington each scored two touchdowns during last Thursday’s scrimmage and although “official” statistics were not kept, the Dolphins dictated play for most of the afternoon. Head Coach Rocky Montz and assistants Scott Plested, Al Heath, Chris Hawkes and Ray Mardsen, are working with a talented group of underclassmen, headed by speedy tailback back Solomon Israel.

PTC Juniors Win Santa Monica Open

Adam Stryer won the boys 12s Novice Division of the Santa Monica Junior Open.
Adam Stryer won the boys 12s Novice Division of the Santa Monica Junior Open.

Palisadians brought a ballhopper’s worth of hardware home from the 79th annual Santa Monica Junior Tennis Open last weekend, dominating most of the younger age groups in the Novice, Satellite and Open divisions. In the boys 8-and-under Satellite, Jake Sands made it back-to-back titles after winning the Jack Kramer event the week before. Sands defeated Daniel Naryshev, 6-3, 6-4, in the final. In the 8-and-under Novice, 6-year-old Lincoln Bellamy won his first tournament, beating Lyle Adomian, 6-1, in the final. The 10-and-under crown went to R.J. Sands who, like his brother, won the Jack Kramer a week before. This time, R.J. defeated fellow PTC player Christian Gambale, 6-3, 6-1, in the final. Playing his first tournament in the boys 12s Novice, Adam Stryer beat Zachary Gorokhovsky, 6-4, to win the title. Stryer is steadily improving with every match and showed he is clearly going to be a force in his age group. PTC player Myles Pindus reached the finals of the boys 12s satellite but perhaps the biggest win went to Harry Cohen, who tore through three matches en route to the final, where he beat Ben Gelfand in a third-set tiebreaker. “Our boys are clearly pushing each other so much everyday that they are winning everything in Southern California now,” PTC Head Pro Jon Neeter said. “Our next big push is going to be to get more girls winning.” Neeter was pleased to see Caroline Vincent win the girls 8-and- unders, ousting Kaitlin Zuber, 6-0, 6-2, in the semifinals and Jane Homer, 7-6, 6-4 in the final. “Tennis is a really interesting paradigm for girls right now,” Neeter said. “There are about 3,000 girls tennis scholarships in the United States each year. A girl can start playing tennis here at the park, just hang in the pack, play regular tournaments in Southern California and get numerous scholarship opportunities.” Palisades Pair Aims for #1 Ranking Robbie Bellamy and Alex Giannini of the Palisades Tennis Center have been playing doubles together for almost a year and already they are within reach of the top national ranking in their age group. Giannini has one of the hardest serves in his age group (they are both 13) and is a smart, competitive player. Bellamy, meanwhile, has one of the best forehands and return of serve in the juniors. Together, they have begun to gel. They finished last year in the 12s by twice nearly upsetting the No. 1 duo in the country’Gregory Garcia of San Diego and Garrett Auproux of Studio City. “We will beat them this year,” Giannini predicted after beating Auproux in straight sets in singles at the USTA nationals in Sacramento. “And we are going to finish the boys 14’s as the No. 1 team in the nation.” Last weekend, Bellamy and Giannini were seeded third in the San Diego National Doubles at the Barnes Tennis Center. On Friday, the boys got a bye to set up a second round match against Adam Ferguson and Luis Miranda of La Mesa. The local boys rolled to a 6-1, 6-0, setting up a quarterfinal match against fellow PTC players Blake Anthony and Brandon Clarke, who were seeded fifth. The teams split the first two sets, setting up a 10-point super tiebreaker now common in all national events. There, Giannini’s serve proved nearly unreturnable as he and Bellamy prevailed, 10-2, and advanced to the semifinals against Irvine’s Stefan Menichella and Jake De Vries. The PTC duo won the first set 6-2 but lost the second, setting the stage for another super-breaker. At 7 points all, Bellamy and Giannini reeled off three points in a row, setting up a finals showdown against top-seeded Garcia and Auproux, who had beaten PTC player Eduardo Nava and his partner, Logan Smith of Carlsbad. It was a close final, but Garcia and Auproux prevailed, 7-5, 7-5. “This one hurt because we had our chances at 5-all in both sets and Alex was serving both times so we should have held at least one of those,” Bellamy said. “However, we are really confident now and know we can win these big matches.” Bellamy and Giannini both plan on playing at Palisades High. “If Brandon [Clarke], Robbie and I all go to Pali we think we can help make that team No. 1 in the nation,” Giannini said. “Blake [Anthony] might go there as well and there are a lot of really good players on the team now.”

Palisadian Kai Forbath kicked two field goals, including a game-winning 42-yarder in overtime, as the UCLA football team upset 18th-ranked Tennessee, 27-24, on Monday at the Rose Bowl in the debut of Bruins’ Coach Rick Neuheisel. Forbath made a 41-yard attempt to pull UCLA within 14-10 late in the third quarter. He was also three-for-three on extra points. The 6-0, 198-pound redshirt sophomore set a Pac-10 freshman record with 25 field goals last year’third on the Bruins’ single-season list. He was a four-year letterman at Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks, where he led the Knights to three CIF titles and a 35-1 record and converting 134 of his 135 extra-point attempts. Schwartz Blocks in Cal’s Win Palisades High alum Mitchell Schwartz, a 6-6, 323-pound redshirt freshman at California, made his presence felt in the Bears’ season opener Saturday night against Michigan State. Schwartz’ block opened a hole for teammate Shane Vareen’s 81-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter that sealed Cal’s 38-31 win. Schwartz’ block did not go unnoticed by the Fox Sports West commentators, who showed the replay and declared “May the Schwartz be with you.” Watching the Cal game from a bar in Charlotte, North Carolina, was Mitchell’s older brother Geoff, who was cut by the Carolina Panthers on Sunday but subsequently offered a practice squad contract, which the former Palisades High three-sport star and Palisadian-Post Cup winner gladly accepted.

Pali Tennis Nets New Coach

On the outside looking in it would appear the Palisades High girls tennis team is the pre-season favorite to win the City title. However, looks can be deceiving and if the Dolphins are to defend their crown come November they will do so with a much different lineup–and a new coach to boot. Sean Passan takes the reigns from longtime Coach Bud Kling and will call upon his experience as JV coach last year to come up with the right lineup every match for the varsity, which consists mostly of the players he instructed last fall. “We only have three returning varsity players and two of them will be playing out of position,” said Passan, also a social studies teacher at PaliHi. “This is a completely new team.” Samantha Kogan, who played No. 2 singles as a freshman last season, left the team to concentrate on junior tournaments and the other three singles player’s from last year’s City championship team–Katy Nikolova, Genna Rochlin and Kathryn Cullen–all graduated, meaning Passan has had to experiment. “Audrey Ashraf and Rose Schlaff are going to be our captains,” he said. “Audrey is an awesome doubles player but she’s testing the waters in singles because it might be where I need her to play.” Jessie Corneli will probably play singles while Phoebe Driscoll could be moved to doubles. Seniors Amy Goore and Marina Sterngold will likely play doubles along with junior Elizabeth Silvers and freshman Perri Zaret. “I realize I have big shoes to fill because Bud was Mr. Tennis in the Palisades,” said Passan, who moved from Connecticut just before the girls’ season started last fall. ‘But the girls have been very receptive’mainly because I coached most of them on JV last year.’ Passan said he enjoys the challenge of taking over a new team because it’s easier to mold. “I’ll be trying different combinations depending on who we’re playing,” he said. “The main thing I’m trying to get across is that our league matches and the playoffs are two different worlds.” The Dolphins open the season next Tuesday at Malibu in the first round of the Bay Area Classic. They host Marymount September 12, travel to Mira Costa Sept. 15 for the second round of the Bay Area Classic, host Beverly Hills Sept. 18 and travel to Santa Monica for the final round of the Bay Area Classic Sept. 24.
