Jill Baldauf, Darlene Lasher Named ‘Women of the Year’

Assemblywoman Julia Brownley has selected Jill Baldauf of Santa Monica Canyon as Woman of the Year in the 41st Assembly district.   Simultaneously, State Senator Fran Pavley has chosen another longtime Pacific Palisades resident, Darlene Lasher, as Woman of the Year in the 23rd Senate district.   ’Jill Baldauf is a courageous, accomplished entrepreneur who has freely given her time and talent to the community,’ said Brownley, who presented Baldauf’s award during a special ceremony on the floor of the California State Assembly on March 21.   A 30-year veteran of the advertising industry, Baldauf held key positions at DDB; Brey, Ogilvy & Mather and Benton & Bowles until she formed her own agency, Ampersand Advertising, in 2003 with key client, Hasbro.   Baldauf is vice chairman of the board of Chrysalis, a nonprofit organization helping the homeless find jobs and become self-sufficient. She also serves on the boards of The Broad Stage at Santa Monica College, Los Angeles Opera and Santa Monica Canyon Civic Association.   In addition, Baldauf is former chairwoman of the governing board at Canyon Elementary School and is currently co-chairing the three-day Blue Ribbon Children’s Festival at the Music Center, which next week brings 18,000 fifth graders to the Music Center for a performance by the Diavolo Dance Theater.   Baldauf and her husband, Steve Grossman, a partner at O’Melveny & Myers, have two daughters (Andie and Ella) and all are avid tennis players. o o o   Darlene Lasher has served on the Board of Directors for the Ocean Park Community Center (OPCC) since 1994. She has also served as founder and project director for the OPCC’s Daybreak Day Center and Shelter for homeless and mentally ill women.   OPCC is the largest and most comprehensive provider of housing and services on the Westside to low-income and homeless youth, adults and families, battered women and their children, and people living with mental illness, particularly homeless mentally ill women.   Lasher received the Public Citizen of the Year award from the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers in 1995. She has also served on the seed fund board of the Liberty Hill Foundation, an organization that works for equal rights, social justice and environmental justice for the people of Los Angeles.
Results of Citywide Budget Survey Reported at Council
Los Angeles residents were asked to make their own attempt at balancing the city’s budget through a Web-based survey’The Los Angeles Budget Challenge’launched on January 27.   The site, which also allowed participants to offer specific suggestions for tackling the city’s projected $350 million deficit, got about 22,900 hits. More than 9,500 users completed surveys (though only about 24 percent of those actually ‘balanced the budget’).   In the zip codes covering Pacific Palisades, 304 residents visited the site and 225 completed surveys, according to a report prepared by Pacific Palisades Community Council member Jennifer Malaret. She and other neighborhood council representatives met on March 12 to review the results of the citywide survey.   Though organized labor was believed to be a driving force behind the total number of responses, West Los Angeles and West Valley residents’ responses generally matched overall opinions on where to make cuts and how to shift funding.   In answer to specific spending questions, a majority of respondents agreed that the city should maintain funding for public libraries and the Department of Recreation and Parks and did not want to see cuts to police or fire departments. That same majority was willing to undertake cuts to transportation services and capital projects and expected city employees to agree to a pay cut and the redesign of retirement benefits for new employees.   On the revenue side, a majority was willing to see increases in licenses, permits, fees and fines, but did not want city officials to dip into the reserve fund to bridge the budget deficit.   Neighborhood council budget advocates prepared a set of recommendations for Mayor Villaraigosa which they believe could restore core services to full funding.   Their key cost savings would come from employee concessions, including salary cuts and higher employee contributions to healthcare costs and pension benefits. Suggested revenue generators included implementing the City Attorney’s Administrative Code (ACE) Enforcement program, which would significantly increase fees for non-compliance with building codes; hiring professional operators to run the city’s parking lots; and exploring branding opportunities for the city.
PaliHi Grad on TV in Her Bridal Dress

Sahar Atarzadeh, who graduated from Palisades High in 2003, will be featured on ‘Say Yes to the Dress’ on The Learning Channel network tomorrow, April 1 at 5 p.m. The show features future brides seeking the perfect wedding dress.   ’I’ve always been a big fan of the show and Kleinfeld,’ Atarzadeh said, noting that that Kleinfeld Bridal occupies a three-story building in Manhattan filled with bridal gowns. ‘My best friend told me to apply for the show, but I didn’t, because I didn’t think I would be picked. Then I decided to apply just for the fun of it with the expectation that it would go nowhere.’   Atarzadeh was chosen and had the opportunity to shop for her gown for her wedding to high school sweetheart Sean Witley, also a PaliHi graduate, next February 4.   After high school, Atarzadeh worked for a law firm as a file clerk, and is now a paralegal. She started belly dancing as a hobby in 2007, never expecting to become good at it, but she’s now dancing professionally on the side. ‘I used it as an outlet for exercise and it became a place that made me love myself and embrace my curves,’ she said.   Although Atarzadeh and Witley lived less than a block from each other in West Los Angeles, they didn’t meet until their senior year. Witley, who played four years of football at Pali, graduated from Cal State Northridge and now works as the business development manager for TeleSign, an Internet security company in Marina del Rey.   During tomorrow’s show, Atarzadeh selects a Lazaro dress. ‘When I tried it on for the first time, I felt my heart sink to the pit of my stomach,’ she told the Palisadian-Post. ‘Everything from the sweetheart neckline, elongated draped bodice, flamenco ruffle pleated skirt and chapel train is what I wanted and envisioned myself wearing the day I marry. It also matches our Spanish Flamenco theme so perfectly! This dress was meant to be mine.’
Rotarians Host ‘Beauty Bus’ Salon for Caregivers, Patients

When member Neil Godsey first approached the Rotary Club of Pacific Palisades about hosting a Beauty Bus event, president Dick Meyer’s response was, ‘Why would the Rotarians host a beauty bus?’ After Godsey explained that Beauty Bus is a nonprofit foundation established to provide beauty care and pampering to homebound patients and their primary caregivers, Meyer persuaded the club to organize a March 28 event at Aldersgate Retreat Center on Haverford. The Rotarians also donated $1,000 to the Beauty Bus Foundation. Godsey knew about the organization because his wife, Heather Mischer, is a longtime friend of co-founder Wendy Marantz Levine, who moved to Pacific Palisades in 2003. ‘When my mother-in-law Beverly, a longtime Palisadian, got brain cancer in 2005, it turned our lives upside down,’ said Godsey, a financial representative with Northwestern Mutual.’For two and a half years, she needed 24-hour, seven-days-a-week care. I saw how difficult it was not only because she was suffering, but that the role of the caregivers was extremely emotional and stressful.’ Meyer added, ‘I became concerned for the caregivers, because I learned that after three years many of them, especially if they are not professional and don’t know how to take care of themselves, burn out.’ On Monday, 29 clients, including a male caregiver, received special pampering from 10 beauty professionals, most of whom have businesses in the Palisades. They were treated to manicures (Rosie’s Nails), massages (Oasis Palisades), hair styling (Dry Bar), facials (Self Centre) and makeup provided by a professional makeup artist. Food and coffee were donated by Scarlett’s Cupcakes, Kay ‘n’ Dave’s and Starbucks. Each guest received a bag of donated beauty products. Levine co-founded the nonprofit with her cousin, Alicia Marantz Liotta, after Levine’s sister, Melissa, died from a neuromuscular disease in 2005. ‘When my sister was sick, my cousin arranged for her to have her hair done,’ Levine said. ‘It let my sister have a moment ‘outside’ away from her disease.’ After her sister died, Levine and her cousin, whose parents Richard and Roberta Marantz live in Pacific Palisades, discussed what they could do in Melissa’s memory. They spoke about how uplifting it was for Melissa to have beauty care and thought they would volunteer for an organization that provided those services. To their surprise, there was no such organization, so in 2009 they started one. ‘We left our full-time jobs last year,’ Levine said, noting that they now have two full-time employees, two part-time employees and more than 100 volunteers. Levine, a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School in 1999, worked for a federal judge, A. Wallace Tashima, on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Pasadena. Liotta was the West Coast editor for Modern Salon magazine, and is currently on maternity leave. ‘They’re caring for loved ones,’ Levine said, as she watched her ‘clients’ receive beauty treatments at Aldersgate. ‘We wanted them to come to a beautiful place and be pampered. It’s such a gift for them and we’re glad to honor Melissa’s memory.’ In addition to hosting monthly events like the one in the Palisades, volunteers from BBF also make in-home visits to homebound, chronically or terminally ill men and women; they also pamper those patients’ primary caregivers.   The nonprofit will be featured on the ABC reality show, ‘Secret Millionaire,’ on Sunday, April 10, at 8 p.m. r

Jo Ann Collins, 80, Active in Palisades
Jo Ann Bocchi Collins, a 55-year resident of Pacific Palisades, died peacefully on March 25. She was 80. Jo Ann was born on December 12, 1930 in Buhl, Minnesota to Gemma and Gregory Bocchi. She left Minnesota in 1950 to join the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve during the Korean War. She served as a staff sergeant until joining Hughes Aircraft in Culver City. Here she met her future husband, Robert Collins. They were married at Trinity Baptist Church in Santa Monica in 1956, and moved to Pacific Palisades. Their son Greg was born the following year, and a daughter, Laura, completed the family in 1959. Jo Ann raised her family as a stay-at-home mom and housewife in the Marquez Knolls area until moving to the Palisades Highlands in 1978. She volunteered her time to many local causes, including Marquez Elementary as a ‘noon’ aide and the Highlands Homeowners Association #4 for over 30 years in a variety of roles, including maintenance coordinator. Her devotion to Calvary Church was deep, whether it was tending to the kitchen, serving as a deaconess on the board or selling donuts between services. She also enjoyed many hobbies such as reading, gardening and following her beloved Dodgers. Jo Ann was predeceased by her husband Bob in 1992. She is survived by her son Greg of Santa Monica; her daughter, Laura Kahrilas (husband Nick) of Agoura Hills; three grandchildren, Cole, Mallory and Trent; and brothers Quint Bocchi of Bloomington, Minnesota and Angelo Bocchi of Lodi, California. She was predeceased by her sister Linda, brother Joseph and infant brother Sylvester. Memorial service plans are pending.
Ronald Greenfield, Former Palisadian
Attorney Ronald Greenfield, a former longtime resident of Pacific Palisades, passed away in Florida on March 18. He was 68. For over 30 years, Ron was a partner in the law firm Hecht, Diamond & Greenfield, which had its offices on Sunset Boulevard, next to the Shell station. He, his ex-wife Cissy and two children, Adam and Lindsay, lived in the Palisades Highlands from 1978 to 1993. Ron was an avid sports fan, holding season tickets to the Rams and then the Raiders, as well as the L.A. Clippers. He was one of the first customers at Mort’s Deli and loved to stop by there for turkey sandwiches before heading out to the Coliseum for games on Sunday afternoon. Ron was also active in the Palisades community, serving for a time as vice president of Kehillath Israel, the congregation he and his family belonged to for more than three decades. Ron is survived by his wife, Jennifer Greenfield of Lutz, Florida; his two children, Adam of Hancock Park (wife Ellen) and Lindsay Plotkin (husband Greg) of Encino; and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Ottawa, Illinois.

King Yan Wu, Engineer, Madame Wu Co-Owner
King Yan Wu, a longtime resident of Pacific Palisades, passed away on March 20. He was 93 years old. King was born in Peking, China, and grew up in Hong Kong, where he graduated from the University of Hong Kong. He came to the United States in the 1940s and received a postgraduate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in aeronautical engineering. On August 5, 1945, King married Sylvia Cheng, also a native of China, and they lived in New York City for 12 years with King working as an engineer and Sylvia raising their three children, Loretta, George and Patrick. The family then moved to Los Angeles for King’s work as an engineer at Hughes Aircraft. King came from a long line of diplomats and dignitaries. His father, Wu Chao Chu, was the Chinese minister to the United States in the 1930s. His great-grandfather, Wu Ting Fong, after graduating from law school in London, was the first ethnic Chinese barrister. Fong was also the Chinese minister to the United States, Spain and Peru in the Qing Dynasty, and later joined Sun Yat-sen in founding the Chinese republic. King’s grandfather, on his mother’s side, Sir Ho Kai, was the first Hong Kong Chinese to qualify in medicine, was the second barrister to be admitted to Hong Kong’s Supreme Court, played a key role in the relationship between the Hong Kong Chinese community and the British colonial government, and was knighted for his public service. Kai Tak Airport, Hong Kong, was named after him and his son-in-law, Au Tak. In 1959, King and his wife became proprietors of Madame Wu’s Garden restaurant in Santa Monica. The restaurant became well-known worldwide for its celebrity clientele who hailed from Hollywood, the political sphere and all over the world. The regular celebrities included, among others, Cary Grant, Mae West, George Burns, Charlton Heston, Elizabeth Taylor, Johnny Carson, Carol Burnett, Walter Matthau, Robert Redford, Paul Newman, Tom Cruise, Steven Spielberg, Governor Pete Wilson, President Ronald Reagan, and Princess Grace Kelly. King Wu was an avid sports fan, Rotarian, ballroom dancer and family man. He lived life to the full. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Madame Sylvia Wu; two children, Patrick Wu (an assistant L.A. County counsel) and George Wu (a federal judge); three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His daughter, Loretta, died of cancer at age 34.
